The Sharp Family ~ 31 Families of HOPE: Day 7

Meet the Sharp Family!: Danny & Bethany Sharp, Will, Hannah, Holly Mae and Sam

Bethany, what first tugged on your heart about the Fatherless?

We have always known there was a need…we both just thought someone else would fill it. After reading “Radical” by David Platt and “Adopted for Life” by Dr. Russell Moore, we were both convicted that we were the ones that were to do something about it. We both felt like this was something God was calling us to do….saying no would be disobedient.

Tell us one unique thing about your family/ministry.

We adopted a child that was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy in China (he has been given a clean bill of health since we have been in the states).  We also adopted a child that is 17 days older than our youngest…so we basically have twins.

What was one challenge either before, during or after your child(ren) came home?

Lack of awareness (why we were doing this..not as a way to “rescue” a child but as a way to show the gospel in tangible form…and as a way to show our obedience to Christ) from both family members and friends made it hard at times…we often felt like we were in this alone.

If you could tell a family that was considering adoption one bit of advice what would it be?

Be prepared for people to not understand why you are doing it….especially if you have biological children of your own….be ready for lots of questions…and remember that often times the questions will open up the door for a wonderful conversation about adoption and the gospel.

What verse was especially encouraging to you during your adoption journey?

“Father to the fatherless, defender of widows — this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families.”  Psalms 68:5-6

We had to remind ourselves often that God is the defender of the orphans and He can and will move on their behalf…this was especially true during the long periods of waiting.

Share one blessing that has happened because you said YES and followed God on this journey.

We saw God work more clearly and more directly through our adoption process than we have at any other time in our lives…we saw God answer prayers and provide exactly what was needed when we had no idea where it was going to come from…the growth we both experienced in our faith has been the greatest blessing (besides of course our sweet son).

Thank you, Sharp Family, for sharing HOPE with us here at Reaching Hearts!  Be sure to check out their family blog to learn more about what their adoption journey was like.
