The McClard Family ~ 31 Families of HOPE: Day 8

Meet the McClard Family!: Dave & Jen McClard, Nathan, Emily & Samuel

Jen, what first tugged on your heart about the Fatherless?

Adoption is something we had always talked about even early in our marriage, but in 2008 the Lord started speaking that is was time to grow our family. We had always been burdened for children right here in the United States, especially those of other races. After much prayer He led us to our agency and then brought our sweet Samuel into our lives.

Tell us one unique thing about your family/ministry.

Adoption has changed our lives FOREVER and has become our passion! We know that not all Christians are called to adopt, but James 1:27 is in the Bible for ALL of us...whether it is serving on a mission trip, sponsoring an orphan, or even something as simple as praying for an adoptive family or blessing them with a meal when they bring their little one home. It is our goal to empower the church and all Christians to step up and serve the Fatherless. We recently launched the Pure Religion Adoption & Orphan Care ministry at our local church and are so excited to see what God is going to do!

What was one challenge either before, during or after your child(ren) came home?

Our biggest challenge was waiting! Since we were open to any race we expected our wait to be rather short, but the Lord had other plans. We waited for our precious Samuel for nearly 18 months, obviously we would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Had our wait been short like we expected we never would have learned the lessons about God's sovereignty and faithfulness that He has taught us during that time.

If you could tell a family that was considering adoption one bit of advice what would it be?

PRAY! Adoption is NOT for the faint of heart, it will change your entire family forever and is not an issue that should be taken lightly.

What verse was especially encouraging to you during your adoption journey?

At the beginning of our adoption jounrney we chose I Samuel 1:27 "For this child I prayed and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him" to be the verse our family clung very close to. We prayed daily as a family for this birthmother choosing life for our child and giving us the precious gift of being his parents. When the call finally came that our son had been born and we needed a name for him it was perfectly obvious he should be named Samuel.

Share one blessing that has happened because you said YES and followed God on this journey.

Adoption has not only changed mine and Dave's lives but the lives of our older children as well. Watching our kids fall in love with their new baby brother has been one of my greatest blessings as a mother. We all agree that the love & laughter in our family has grown by leaps and bounds since Samuel has joined our family.

If you could share one other thing that is meaningful to you on the topic of adoption/orphan care, what would it be?

As a Christian I understood what it meant to be God's child, but it wasn't until I fell in love with a child that I did not carry in my womb that I fully understood what it meant to be adopted as one of His children. We firmly believe physical adoption is a perfect picture of redemption and adoption into the family of God.

Thank you, McClard Family, for sharing HOPE with us here at Reaching Hearts!  Be sure to check out their family blog and also find out more about their ministry here! You can find them on Facebook under "Pure Religion Adoption & Orphan Care".  The McClard Family was blessed by an adoption loan through the ABBA Fund, a ministry that provides relationships, encouragement, resources and interest-free adoption loans to help Christian families adopt.
